Meet Your Teacher
Serena
I specialize in helping middle and high school students strengthen their mathematical reasoning by encouraging them to articulate their thought processes while working through challenging problems. My teaching approach emphasizes guided discovery—helping students uncover more efficient problem-solving strategies while addressing common misconceptions that often occur in secondary mathematics. By connecting lessons to students’ interests and personalities, I create an engaging learning experience that keeps them motivated even when tackling demanding topics like algebra, geometry, and statistics. I focus on mathematics from Pre-Algebra through Statistics, with experience teaching in various formats including 1:1 tutoring, small group instruction, and classroom settings. My specialization in secondary mathematics allows me to anticipate the difficulties students face as they progress through increasingly abstract high school math courses. Students who work with me develop a deeper understanding of mathematics by learning to break down complex problems into logical, manageable steps. I help them identify and close reasoning gaps, building the systematic thinking skills essential for advanced high school coursework and college readiness. I hold a B.A. in Mathematics Education from UC Berkeley, where I completed extensive K–12 education coursework focused on effective secondary math instruction. My experience includes both in-person and online tutoring for middle and high school students, with a strong focus on designing customized lessons aligned with California Common Core standards to meet the diverse needs of today’s learners.
